From 7 until 18 November 2011 the Corps trained the Dutch brigades 13 and 43 Mechanised and 11 Airmobile in exercise ODYSSEE SWORD. 361 US Civil Affairs Brigade and the Italian Taurinense Mountain Brigade supported the exercise. ODYSSEE SWORD was conducted in Germany on a NATO Training Area although the scenario was set in a fictitious part of the world, where an international crisis had to be solved and humanitarian aid was needed.
Apart from training the brigades, the Headquarters (HQ) of 1 (German/Netherlands) Corps used ODYSSEE SWORD to further develop its knowledge and skills that make this HQ an interagency capable, multinational, rapidly deployable High Readiness Force Headquarters that can operate worldwide.

On Friday 04 November, the Federal Minister of Defence, Thomas de Maizière, and his Dutch counterpart Hans Hillen were welcomed with military honours in Münster at HQ 1 (GE/NL) Corps.
The two Defence Ministers wanted to know how 1 (GE/NL) Corps wants to realise an improved Comprehensive Approach in future missions abroad. To this end the Corps has already successfully started some initiatives. For example, the Corps exercised in September under the leadership of the Foreign Ministries of both Germany and the Netherlands countries the co-operation with about 150 civilian participants representing 30 different governmental and non-governmental organisations. “I see a key to success for a better Comprehensive Approach in this context," according to Commander Ton van Loon who emphasises the motto: ‘co-operation should start prior to meeting in a crisis area’.

The concept of cooperation between civilian & military partners is the most promising approach to dealing with contemporary crises.
We believe cooperation should start before we meet abroad in a crisis and should include all elements of mission preparation, including common exercises and training.
Therefore, 1(GE/NL) Corps has initiated COMMON EFFORT. Currently representatives from sixteen National and International Organizations are working together on ways how to improve our cooperation on the operational level.
